Write a picture book with your child

Step 1. Show your early reader a picture book and ask them to tell you a story they see in one or more of the illustrations. Once you are finished read him or her the picture book.

  • Step 2. Ask your child to draw you a picture, then tell him or her a story you see in the picture. After you are done ask your child to tell you what he or she had in mind when drawing the picture.

  • Step 3. Write a 4-page picture book with your child, where you rotate with one of you creating a simple drawing, and the other telling the story they see in the picture in a couple of sentences. Then switching places until the book is done.

Try it!

Eventually, you can pick a theme and do the same thing, where all 4 pictures are related (i.e. A day in the park). When you are ready to take it to the next level, try to write 4 rhyming lines about each picture and write your first rhyming picture book together. It will be as much fun for you as it is for your child!
